Couples Counseling has a different approach than individual counseling. Couples counseling primary focus of the therapy is on a healthy relationship. Effective counseling can help couples develop new skills and break through potential barriers to achieve greater understanding, connection, and intimacy in their relationship. Think of this view of therapy as continuing education for your relationship. I meet with couples at all stages from unmarried couples to those with many years of commitment.
If you are wondering if couple’s work is right for you, you could come in and have an intake and see if it is what you are looking for to enhance your relationship. Nearly everyone enters marriage with the dream of a fulfilling, happy lifelong union. But often couples reach a crisis point where they fear closeness or trust will never reappear in their relationship. Sometimes it’s after years of emotional distance, financial problems, sexual problems, or constant arguing. Sometimes an affair that creates an emergency. Other times couples feel that their relationship never really started out right. Whatever the reason, counseling can offer the hope that you may have doubted possible. Counseling provides an avenue to work within all of those viewpoints.
I meet with couples in order to improve the present dynamics and build on existing strengths. I teach communication, conflict resolution skills and relationship enhancing activities. I also teach other skills to enhance relationship strength.
